Student Tutoring

According to Cambridge dictionary, tutor is a teacher who teaches a child outside of school, especially in order to give the child extra help with a subject they find difficult. In this study i am being a tutor in tutoring a student of senior high school in Banda Aceh. The tutee was a student of second grade of MAN Model Banda Aceh namely Santania Dura. I spent 2 weeks and 4 meetings in tutoring her about past tense. The problem that tutee has is she feel confious of using present and past tense in making a sentence and speaking as well. Also, she complains to me that she is not know whether the verb is regullar or irregular verb and she still lack of vocabularies.
The first meeting, i  didn’t give her any treatment, we only do  a conversation about her problem. Perhaps it make her comfortable to share her problem and learn English with me as her tutor. At the end of meeting, i asked her what they know about the present and past tense. she do know what present and past tense are but she is only not able yet to make a good sentence of this tenses.
Second meeting, In the beginning of the tutoring i gave her the material. I explain how do we know wheter it past or present. Then, i command her to make a paragraph about past tense in written. The story was good, but the verb that she used is still wrong due to she do not know the verb of V2 and sometimes the sentence is indonesia in English. For example, she write “why do you see me like that ?” she translate it based on Indonesia language. Actually she meant to say “why do you look at me that way/ like that ?”. when i correct the paragraph, she asked me how do we know the verb of give is gave  in V2 ? then I told her, to know it we have to look into dictionary and make it familiar with us. Not all verb can be added –ed at the end of the V. Next problem is she lack of knowledge about the synonym of the V. She just write anything what she knew, without seeing whether it was appropiate to used or not in the context. I decided to give her 4 or 5 synonyms of verb and how to difference it in every meeting. The synonym that i gave are like (beauty, pretty, cunning, attractive) (search, browse, find out, figure out, and looking for). After giving her some new vocabularies, i asked her to make a sentence of that word. As a homework, i also ask the tutee to make another paragraph or writing of diary in English and absolutely in past tense and i hope it could be better than before.
Next meeting, i can’t attend the tutoring activity due to an emergency problem but i still can teach her through WhatsApp. We did the third meeting with voice note and chatting through whatsApp in android OS. I also asked Santania to send me the homework, then i correct it by voicing note to her. The second task is better than before, she has used the synonym that i gave before. Such as, “my father bought new bird yesterday and the bird is so attractive”. most sentence in her second homework was correct and it shows that she have understood how to used past tense in setence even she could make a paragraph now. Last task that i gave her is to analyse a video about past tense.

Last meeting, i asked her to explain the last assignment that i gave and all the answer almost correct, only twice she was incorrect. The explanation that she gave should be “met is V2 of meet and this sentence is past tense due to there is ‘last year’ at the end of the sentence”. At the end of the meeting, i provided her a test of past tense and the questions is from the book Grammar in Used by Raymon Murphy. based on the test, the tutee could answer the question easily and only 3 question incorrect. Eventhough Santania’s answer is not all correct, i could conclude that there are an improvement on her, the sentence that she made on the task was very good. the result of the test is also satisfy. Therefore, i could conclude that the tutoring of Santania’s problem was improved.

Students language learning beliefs: correlation between learning strategies and final achievement

Introduction Every students has their uniqueness in learning language and it based on their beliefs. According to Cabarog lu and Roberts (2000, p.388) they defined beliefs as “a set of conceptual representation which signify to its holder a reality or given state of affairs of sufficient validity, thruth or trust wothness to warrant reliance upon it as a guide to personal thought and action”. However, there is no complete agreement on meaning and definition of beliefs, although the definition of this concept enjoys popularity in language learning research. Horwitz (1987) defined beliefs about language learning as language learners’ preconceived ideas or nations on variety of issues related to second or foreign language learning. for instance, some of them used to study language by using audio and the rest used to learn by audio-visual. It depend on students’ need and as the teacher they should provide them the best media to make an attractive learning. Therefore, the learners’ tho

JAMILA LYISCOTT : THREE WAYS TO SPEAK ENGLISH

Jamila Lyiscott is a girl which could speak English in three tongue and she decided to treat all three of her languages as equals because she is articulate. Who   controls the articulation ? English language is a multifaceted oration subject to indefinite transformation. She is a tri-lingual orator which used differently in home, school and friends. She could speak like “What’s good ?” “Whatagwan” and “Hello”. Sometimes she is consistent with the language which is used now then switch it up to reduce the boredom. Sometimes she fight back two tongues, while she uses the other one in the classroom and when she mistakenly mix them up and feel crazy like she is cooking in the bathroom. She do know that she had to borrow American language because hers was stolen. However, the western cannot expect her to speak their history wholly while hers is broken.
