Introduction of The Effectivenes of Using Audiovisual as a Medium in TEFL

Teaching English as Foreing Language (TEFL) in the classroom is not as easy as we think. To attract students, teaching learning process must be interesting and as a teacher they have to provide the best quality of teaching materials that will be engaging, attracting, and up-to-date (Ismaili, 2013). Teachers took a big role in giving motivation to pupils, they try to find some ways of making their learners want to learn the target language (Gilakjani et al, 2012). One of ways that teacher can do in increasing pupils’ motivation is providing them an attracting and enjoying environment through medium in study English. In general, there are some types of media that the teachers can use to support teaching activities, there are audio, visual, and audiovisual. In this paper, the writer only discuss the benifit of audiovisual media in teaching learning activity and how effective this media to be used in the classroom. Webster’s Encyclopedia Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language defines Audio-Visual as “training or educational materials directed at both the senses of hearing and the sense of sight, films, recordings, photographs, which is used in classroom instructions, library collections or the likes. Basically, teachers use the audiovisual material in order to motivate learners in learning English and improve their ability in listening, speaking, and mastering vocabulary. Based on my experience, learning language by using audiovisual such as a short movie, cartoon movie, blockbuster movie is really helpful in developing those skills. According to Kusumarasdyati, Luo (2004), They found that movies could catch the learners’ interest and it can positively affect their motivation to learn. Commonly, animation movies/cartoon might help pupils by repeating the script, pronunce the words like the actor did and practice it in their daily life. Hence, teachers must be creative in create an attractive teaching learning process in the classroom and they have to avoid the monotonous media like white board, picture, and chart except they need to and try to get the new media to teach the students. This paper describes the benefits and the effectivenes of using audiovisual as a medium in developing listening skill, speaking and mastering vocabulary.

The Nature of Current Critique

Learning is a process of studying which needs time and attention to do that. It takes a long time to have a good learner. Besides, they also have a lot of teachers to facilitate the learners to be so. The students learn because they have something to achieve in their life. Learning and test have a connection one another, as we know test is a method of measuring someone’s ability or knowledge. They know and aware of their capability through the test. According to high-stakes test, there are many consequence of this test. Begin with the work of Smith and Rottenberg (1991) in critiques of high stakes testing that published in Educational Measurement : they identified six effect of external testing and one of them is “Neglect of teaching material not covered by test.” It means the students study just for a test.
